    Fallen hero at Pickett's Charge

Union Colonel Eliakim Sherrill, a Scarce Carte de Visite. 2.4" x 4", backmark reads, "J.G. Vail Photographer, 6 Seneca St, Geneva, N.Y." Surface discoloration on the albumen does not detract from the strong full frontal pose of this rare image. Light soiling on verso. Prior to the war, he had served as Congressman from New York. He organized the 126th New York Infantry in August 1862 and became its first colonel. He was shot through the lower jaw during the Battle of Harper's Ferry; captured and paroled. The wound never healed and after rejoining his regiment, he went on furlough not returning to active duty until January of 1863. At Gettysburg, he assumed command of the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, II Corps after the death of Colonel George Willard on July 2. On his first full day in command, he suffered a fatal shot to the bowels at Cemetery Ridge while defending against Pickett's Charge.
