    Description

Union Colonel (and Future General) John T. Wilder Carte de Visite. The oval albumen features Wilder in uniform. Though he came from a long line of military veterans, Wilder favored an industrialist route early in life, establishing a foundry in the late 1850s. As his father and grandfather had done in earlier American wars, Wilder too joined the army, organizing in 1861 a company in the 17th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. After a short, though eventful military career, he left the army in late 1864, returning to his foundry. Penciled identification notations on the reverse. Only slight soiling.
