Union Cartes-de-Visite: William Buel Franklin, Edward Ferrero, David G. Farragut, James A. Garfield, John C. Frémont and John Gray Foster. Seven (7) cartes including William Buel Franklin (1823-1903) by Brady's National Portrait Gallery; Edward Ferrero (1831-1899) by J. Gurney & Son, New York; David G. Farragut (1801-1870) by C. D. Fredricks & Company, New York; James A. Garfield (1831-1881); full-standing John C. Frémont (1813-1890); and two (2) cartes of John Gray Foster (1823-1874). The cartes of Garfield, Frémont, and Foster are by Anthony, New York, with the Frémont and Foster cartes from negatives from Brady's National Portrait Gallery. Franklin, the top West Point graduate of 1843, was trained as an engineer. He saw rapid promotion, but came under fire for the defeats at Fredericksburg and Red River. He later served as an executive for the Colt Fire Arms Company. Ferraro, a division commander, fought at many of the major battles of the war, but gained infamy by his misconduct at the Battle of the Crater, when he sequestered himself in a bombproof and got drunk. Foster, a decorated veteran of the Mexican War, was trained as an engineer. He fought at Roanoke Island, New Berne and Knoxville. He headed the Departments of North Carolina and Virginia. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
