    Union Cartes-de-Visite: Thomas Francis Meagher, Gorge Gordon Meade and James Birdseye McPherson. Five (5) cartes including Thomas Francis Meagher (1823-1867) by J. Gurney & Son, New York; three (3) cartes of Gorge Gordon Meade (1815-1872), one standing by Brady's National Portrait Gallery, New York, one of Meade sitting by Philadelphia Photographic Company, and one of a younger Meade sitting with sword by McAllister & Brother, Philadelphia; and James Birdseye McPherson (1828-1864) by J. Gurney & Son, New York. Meagher, an Irish national, was a staunch partisan for Irish independence from Britain. Along with Michael Corcoran, he led the 69th New York, the "Irish Brigade". He fought at First Bull Run, Yorktown, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Most of his brigade were killed in the assault on Marye's Heights. He died in 1867 after getting drunk and falling off a steamboat at Fort Benton. McPherson graduated 1st in his class at West Point in 1853. He was Chief of Engineers for Grant and fought at Forts Henry & Donelson, Vicksburg, Champion's Hill and the Atlanta Campaign. He was killed on July 22, 1864 while riding towards a Confederate position southeast of Atlanta. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
