    Description

Union Cartes-de-Visite: Joseph Jackson Bartlett, Hiram G. Berdan, Henry Washington Benham and George Dashiell Bayard. Four (4) cartes including Joseph Jackson Bartlett (1834-1893) by Augustus Morand, New York, signed by Bartlett on verso; an unmarked Hiram G. Berdan (1823-1893); (1813-1884) by John Goldin & Company, Washington, D.C.; George Dashiell Bayard (1835-1862) by Charles Fredricks & Company, New York. Bartlett was a capable and cool-headed leader whose conduct at First Bull Run mitigated the Federal rout. He proved equally capable at Antietam, Fredericksburg and Salem Church. At Appomattox, he was selected to receive the ceremonial surrender of arms of Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Berdan organized "Berdan's Sharpshooters" and involved himself with the development of arms and new weapons. He led the 1st Regiment which saw action in the Peninsula Campaign and Malvern Hill. Benham ranked 1st in the West Point class of 1837. His main strength was in the field of engineering. Bayard led cavalry troops and specialized in scouting and defenses. He fought at Falmouth, Cedar Mountain and Fredericksburg where he was wounded on December 13, 1862, dying the next day. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
