    Description

Union Cartes-de-Visite: John Gibbon and John White Geary. Two (2) cartes including John Gibbon (1827-1896) by Brady's National Portrait Gallery; and John White Geary (1819-1873) by Patton & Lee, Reading, Pennsylvania. Gibbon, a Pennsylvania native, had three brothers who fought for the Confederacy. His specialty was artillery and he authored the "Artillerist's Manual" in 1860. He was given a command of a brigade composed of Indiana and Wisconsin regiments who wore distinctive hats and gaiters. Known initially as the "Black Hat Brigade", they later were known as the "Iron Brigade" after distinguishing themselves at South Mountain. Gibbon was wounded at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. He later fought with Grant at Petersburg and was one of the commissioners who received the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee's army. Geary was a man of many talents. He organized postal service in California, was Mayor of San Francisco, Territorial Governor of Kansas and Governor of Pennsylvania. He organized the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry and fought at Cedar Mountain (wounded), Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Lookout Mountain and the Atlanta Campaign. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
