Union Cartes-de-Visite: Henry Bohlen, Louis Blenker, Francis Preston Blair, Jr., Edward Bates, David Bell Birney, Daniel Davidson Bidwell and Hiram Gregory Berry. Six (6) cartes including a full-standing Henry Bohlen (1810-1862) by E. Anthony, New York; a full-standing Louis Blenker (1812-1863) by Charles Fredricks & Company, New York; Francis Preston Blair, Jr. (1821-1875) with carte of Edward Bates (1793-1869) on other side; full-standing David Bell Birney (1825-1864) by J. E. McClees, Philadelphia; Daniel Davidson Bidwell (1819-1864) by Douglas & Company, Buffalo; and Hiram Gregory Berry (1824-1863) by Brady's Gallery, New York. The German-born Bohlen organized the 75th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He served under fellow Germans Blenker, Schurz and Sigel. He was killed on August 22, 1862 while doing reconnaissance of Stonewall Jackson's forces near Remington, Virginia. Blenker led a division of German troops, got trounced by Stonewall Jackson at Cross Keys and died on October 31, 1863 as a result of injuries incurred when he fell from his horse at Warrenton, Virginia the previous year. Blair was perhaps the most capable of "political" generals and commanded various army corps from Chattanooga to the Atlanta Campaign. Birney organized the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers and served under Philip Kearny and Dan Sickles. He fought at Williamsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, initiating the attack at the Peach Orchard. Bidwell fought at many of the war's major battles including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Cedar Creek, where he was killed by a shell on October 19, 1864. Berry served with distinction in the Army of the Potomac, fighting at First Bull Run, the Peninsula, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, where he was killed at the head of his command. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
