Mortally Wounded at Little Round Top

Union Carte-de-Visite: Strong Vincent. Carte of Vincent (1837-1863) by Dolph Brothers, Erie, Pennsylvania. Vincent, a Harvard-educated lawyer, volunteered at the outset of hostilities and was commissioned lieutenant of the 83rd Pennsylvania Regiment. He initially fought at Yorktown, took a sick-leave, then joined his regiment for Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. He was promoted to commander of the 1st Brigade 1st Division V Corps. On the 2nd day of Gettysburg, Vincent led his brigade up the slopes of the unoccupied Little Round Top. The Confederates immediately attacked, but were held off in a heroic defense. Shot while rallying his men, Vincent died five days later. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
