    Description

    Union Carte-de Visite: Baron Adolph Wilhelm August Friedrich von Steinwehr. Carte of von Steinwehr (1822-1877) by Brady's National Portrait Gallery, New York. A career soldier, Steinwehr volunteered after the attack on Fort Sumter. He was commissioned Colonel of the 29th New York Regiment. He was active in recruiting German-Americans to the Union army. He fought under Frémont, Blenker and Sigel in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign and Second Bull Run. He also fought at Chancellorsville and in the defense of Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg.
