    Union Brigadier General James Clay Rice: Killed in Action at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House Carte de Visite. Approximately 2.5" x 4" with an R. W. Addis, Washington, D. C. backmark. Contemporary biographical information by hand in ink on the verso. A handsome head and shoulders portrait of Rice in uniform. James C. Rice (1828-1864) participated in many important engagements during the Civil War. He was present at both the first and second battles of Bull Run, the Peninsula Campaign, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the battle of the Wilderness. He was mortally wounded at Spotsylvania Court House. As he lay dying on the battlefield he is said to have muttered "turn me over that I may die with my face to the enemy". The image has toned with age and the corners have been clipped, otherwise it is in very good condition.
