    Union Brevet Brigadier General Ely Samuel Parker: One of Two Native Americans To Attain a General's Rank in the Civil War Albumen Carte de Visite. Approximately 2.5" x 4" with a C. D. Fredricks & Co. studio mark on the recto and verso. Mounted in a contemporary CDV album sleeve captioned in ink at the lower edge. Ely Parker (1828-1898) poses in seated in civilian clothes holding a book with his arm resting on a side table. Parker, a Seneca Indian, was an attorney, engineer, military man and tribal diplomat. During the Civil War he was present at many of the most important engagements including the Siege of Vicksburg, battle of Chattanooga, Overland Campaign, Siege of Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign. He helped draft the surrender documents and was present when Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. After the war he became the first Native American head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. A spectacularly clear, bright image in fine condition.
