    Description

Ulysses S. Grant Carte de Visite Signed "U.S. Grant Lt. Gen." 2.5" x 4", with an E & H.T. Anthony, New York imprint on verso. The image was published from a photographic negative from Brady's National Portrait Gallery. A classic image of Grant seated in uniform, with his arm resting on a side table. When Grant was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1864, he agreed to sit down for photographer Mathew Brady. As the sun had begun to set by the time Grant arrived, Brady instructed one of his assistants to open the shades of the skylight in the studio. The assistant slipped and shattered the skylight, causing two-inch-thick shards of glass to rain down around Grant, who had taken his seat as requested. He was unharmed, and showed "the most remarkable display of nerve" that Brady had ever seen. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Toning throughout, with mild soiling and some pencil notations on verso. Else very good.
