    Description

    Two Union Officers with a Young Black "Powder Monkey" Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 3.75", with a B. Moses, New Orleans imprint on verso. Two Union officers, posed in a foyer setting, with a young African American boy, dressed in the blue wool uniform and navy flat hat of the "powder monkeys." Powder monkeys were young boys employed by the Navy who were tasked with ferrying gunpowder from the powder magazine in the ship's hold to the artillery guns. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

    Condition: Clipped corners, with lightly toned edges. Small amount of paper loss at the bottom right corner, else good.
