Three Variant Views of the Famous 1861 "Ink Well" Abraham Lincoln Pose. Abraham Lincoln posed for the famous "Ink Well" portraits with Alexander Gardener on February 24, 1861. There are five different variants of the photograph. We offer three here. The first is #O-49a; with his right hand in his lap and the left draped down over the arm of the chair. The brim of his top hat is barely visible in the right of the frame. Anthony / Brady imprint on verso. A strong and poignant example of this fantastic picture. In very fine condition; very dark and crisp, an excellent copy; pencil notations on verso; small blemish on the upper edge; adhesive residue visible on the right edge near border; double lined gilt border; square corners. The second image is #O-53b; right hand on his thigh in a fist and left hand resting on the table. The Anthony / Brady imprint on the verso is upside down in relation to the image. The plate this was produced from also had a crack in it; the crack is visible in the lower right corner, crossing Lincoln's foot. In very fine condition; very dark and saturated; light stippling effect in the upper quadrant; light toning on both sides; pencil notations on verso; corners moderately worn; double lined gilt border; square corners. The third image is #O-50b; with his right hand on his thigh and left forearm resting on the table. Lincoln is facing to the side, not forward. His top hat is in full view on the right of the table. Bears no imprint. In very fine condition; light warping from dampness; not as dark and crisp as the other two offered here; double lined gilt border; square corners; emulsion slightly overlaps the border. A wonderful opportunity to own three of the five iconic portraits!
