    Description

Thirteen Benjamin Butler Cartes de Visite. This lot includes thirteen individual photographs of Butler, four of which are engravings from original portraits. Majority of them feature him in civilian attire, and a small number in full military regalia. Butler was an important fixture in the Southern campaigns during the Civil War. His political connections allowed him to serve in many capacities under General Grant. He was reviled by Southern Whites and even called "Beast Butler." An important and controversial figure in the war, this lot allows the buyer to obtain numerous views of this influential man. All in fine or better condition; bearing numerous imprints; including Anthony / Brady, Gurley, and Tomlinson. The majority of the condition issues stem from toning on the emulsion, and in some cases light discoloration, detracting minimally.
