    Texas Ranger Captain John R. Hughes Photograph, circa 1890s. Measuring 3.75" x 4", Hughes is pictured in this sepia toned portrait, head turned slightly to his left, wearing a dark coat and tie. Chipping and loss along top edge with some staining; loss of paper at lower right corner. With mounting remnants on the verso. Provenance: George Jackson Collection.

    More Information:

    Captain John R. Hughes joined the Texas Rangers in 1887 and served as captain of the Frontier Battalion's Company "D"  from 1893 until there disbandment in 1901. With the formation of the State Rangers shortly thereafter, he was elected one of four captains and held that position until his retirement, after twenty-eight years of service, in 1915. Hughes committed suicide in 1947 at the ripe old age of ninety-two and was later inducted into the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame.
