SUPER LINCOLN TINTYPE WE’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. Great highly distinctive profile portrait, a known but not often seen Lincoln image. However we have never seen it on tin. Interestingly, like the more familiar series which includes a Lincoln, 32 it was made by Abbott and Co., NY. However it is of a somewhat smaller size, and has a completely different back card than the standard type. Inasmuch as we have never seen any other figure in this smaller format, it seems safe to presume that this Lincoln was a single issue and not part of any set or series. It also seems likely that it was issued in this form, which is , of course, completely different and more expensive than the standard Abbotts. It is under glass, with a double gilt brass mat, and set into an unusual small size gouda percha case which seems to have been made specifically for it. In studying this item we took it apart (see photos) and the present mat seems clearly to be original, fitting perfectly and leaving a clear outline around the edge of the image indicating that it has been there "since day one". Everything is in great condition except for the Abbott card. Somehow moisture worked its way into the case, leaving a water stain and causing deterioration of the surface paper layer. This tintype image itself is somewhat dark, but quite distinct; this is clearly "as made". A truly exceptional Lincoln item!
