Six Cartes de Visite of Ulysses S. Grant. Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), 18th President (1869-1877), served in the Mexican War, but made his mark in the Civil War. He won the first significant Union victory at Fort Donelson. At Shiloh, he took heavy losses, but won, and in July 1863, forced Vicksburg to surrender. He fought Lee throughout Virginia, including the Wilderness and Petersburg, and accepted his surrender at Appomattox. He won the 1868 Presidential election, and in office he continued Reconstruction, signed a gold currency law, and saw the Panic of 1873. His administration was affected by several scandals, though Grant was never involved. In true timely fashion, he finished his memoirs a week before he died. Six images of Grant are offered here, five of which are photographs and one a tintype in a CDV mount. The tintype is of an older looking Grant, but in his typical Union blue officer's coat. His cheeks have been tinted rose and the embossed frame around the image is a Union stars and stripes motif. The CDVs all feature Grant in his uniform and one even shows him in the regulation Hardee hat. His beard is long and rather scruffy looking. However, the image of Grant in this fancy headgear is quite intriguing, and one not often seen in typical CDVs. Another image of note is a full body shot of Grant, leaning on a desk with one hand in his pocket. He looks young, brave, and determined. This is the image many people associated with the man who led the Union to victory. All six images are in fine condition or better; the tintype is soiled moderately on the recto, tape present on verso to hold tintype in; several images have pencil notations on verso.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
