Sawnee, The Wonderful Musical Contraband Known as the "Human Organ" Carte de Visite.
    2.5" x 4"
    E. & H.T. Anthony from a Photographic Negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery; circa 1863

Full-length portrait of the emancipated slave and African-American turned performer in a Union uniform, leaning against a chair, his right hand tucked inside his sack coat and left hand holding a kepi. Sawnee was found homeless in 1862 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania by promoter Robert Criswell. Sawnee was dubbed the "Human Organ" for his ability to imitate the organ, and virtually any sound, and sang plantation songs during exhibitions in the North, including New York City and Philadelphia.

Condition: Modest toning to the mount, with a faint stain at lower margin. Otherwise a clear image in very good condition.
