Robert Smalls Carte de Visite, Signature, and Stereoview. The rare CDV features a well-dressed Smalls standing by a chair. The image is in a sleeve (4.75" x 6.5") originally removed from a CDV album. The photographer's imprint on the reverse is from B. F. Reimer of Philadelphia. The reverse also bears the identification of Smalls, along with a tax stamp dated 1866. On the recto of the album page below the image is written, "Captain Robert Small, U.S. Navy, Ran the Steamboat 'Planter' out of Charleston Harbor to join the United States forces. Commissioned Captain in the U.S. Navy." The signature (4.5" x 2.5") reads, "Robert Smalls / Beaufort / S.C." and is affixed to a larger sheet (8.5" x 11") containing printed information about Smalls. Very minimal soiling. The stereoview (7" x 3.5") is from the "Southern Series" from Charleston, South Carolina, and is labeled "No. 35. Steamer 'Planter'" and features the steamer ladened with cotton bales. Minor foxing.

Robert Smalls was a slave who piloted the gunboat CSS Planter out of the Charleston Harbor on May 13, 1862. He delivered it, along with the other slaves onboard, to Union naval authorities, making him a hero. Lincoln rewarded him by appointing him a Union Navy captain and pilot. Following the Civil War, Smalls was elected one of the nation's first black congressmen. Smalls' signatures are quite rare.
