Robert E. Lee: Pre-War Portrait Engravings and Cartes-de-Visite [CDVs]. Collection of thirteen [13] portraits of Lee, based on pre-war photographs. 1) Unmarked portrait after the circa 1850-1855 quarter-plate daguerreotype attributed to Charles Rees of Richmond and New York, possibly the most complete version in CDV format, showing cuff buttons, cap and book. 2) Copy image of the "West Point" daguerreotype, made post-war with M. Miley of Lexington credit. Supposedly copied from the original daguerreotype owned by the Lee family. 3) Unmarked CDV with replacement of the U. S. Engineers insignia with that reading "VA" [Virginia]. Twice-identified as Genl. Lee on verso. Most likely produced early on in the Confederacy. 4) Unmarked CDV attributed to Tucker & Perkins of Augusta, Georgia. The name of the touch-up artist, Henri Collins, is visible in the lower right. 5) Early oval vignette attributed to Tucker & Perkins of Augusta. 6) CDV with larger-than-usual head & torso of Lee. This is an uncommon close-up view of the unaltered original. 7) Vignetted view of Lee with added State of Virginia uniform. Anthony/Brady back mark. 8) CDV of same pose showing a seated Lee in the uniform of a Virginia colonel. Bendann & Brothers of Baltimore back mark, used only in the 1859-1862 period. 9) Unmarked CDV with vignetted portrait of Lee in uniform identified on both front & back. 10) Vignetted portrait, likely copied from a lithograph, Gurney & Son credit and back mark. Three clipped corners. 11) Engraved portrait with R. R. Landon of Chicago back mark. 12) Early Confederate CDV of Lee with added beard (copyrighted by S. C. McIntyre of Richmond in 1861) but copied and published by a Parisian company, Photographie Universelle. 13) 6" x 6.75" trimmed book plate engraving by A. H. Ritchie.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.
