    Description

Robert E. Lee: Possibly Unique Dual-Photographer Carte-de-Visite [CDV]. Odd-size (2 3/8" x 4 1/2"), elongated carte featuring the "unbuttoned coat taken-in-the-field" portrait of Lee, taken after the Battle of Fredericksburg in early 1863. Coated stock mount with embossed Minnis & Cowell credit dated 1863 at bottom. R. Wearn of Columbia, South Carolina back mark. This version is usually seen in oval format. This is rectangular and shows more of Lee's coat than other versions. Purchased by the consignor at an estate sale in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Museum of the Confederacy has a similar carte with Wearn back mark, but it lacks the Minnis & Cowell credit. Some flyspecks in upper left, overall fading, vertical dark line to right of portrait, damp stains most noticeable on verso.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.
