Robert E. Lee Carte de Visite Signed. Chest-up portrait, 2.5" x 4", signed "RE Lee" on the albumen. A war-dated portrait of the beloved general in Confederate uniform taken at the Richmond studio of Vannerson & Levy (stamped on the reverse). On verso also signed by Lee's wife, Mary Custis Lee, who writes, "Edna P. Imboden from her friend Mary C. Lee. White Sulphur August 7th 1867." Lee's hair and beard have been hand colored. Edna Imboden was the daughter of General John D. Imboden, who served with Lee during the Civil War.

Condition: Light toning throughout, with minor foxing. Light wear and soiling to corners and edges. Lee's signature is large and clear. As noted, the portrait has been hand colored at Lee's hair and beard. Overall good.
