    Description

Robert Anderson Carte de Visite Signed "Robert Anderson Bri. Gen U.S.A." 2.5" x 4", Fontayne, New York imprint on verso. A vignette bust portrait of the general who defended Fort Sumter in April 1861, seen in his military uniform. Anderson has signed the lower part of the albumen. On verso has been written in pencil, "Sanitary Fair New York Apl 6/64." Anderson became an immediate national hero as the man who defied South Carolina officials by not abandoning Fort Sumter after the bombardment. His recruitment tour of the U.S. was highly successful, and he also served as commander of the Department of Kentucky before handing over command to General Sherman in October 1861. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Lightly toned throughout, with soiling at the lower edge and across some of the portrait. Part of Anderson's signature is very slightly smudged. Minor soiling on verso, else good.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
