    Robert Anderson Carte de Visite Signed "Robert Anderson." 2.5" x 4", Bogardus, New York imprint on verso. A seated portrait of the Union general, seen in full uniform with his arm resting on a small table and a book in his lap. A coat or cape has been draped across his left shoulder, and he is holding a small pair of glasses in his right hand. Anderson has signed on the mount below the albumen. Anderson is best known as the Union commander who surrendered Fort Sumter to the Confederacy following their bombardment of the South Carolinian fort in April 1861. He later helped with Union recruitment and served as commander of the Department of Kentucky before handing over command to General Sherman in October 1861. From the Bret J.     Condition: Lightly toned throughout, with minor soiling and wear at the edges and corners. Two small tears and areas of bumping at the right edge. Minor soiling on verso with some small pencil notations, else good.
