Philip Sheridan Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4.25", a chest-up portrait in uniform, T. Lilienthal, no place backstamp on verso. Signed below the image: "Phil. H. Sheridan Maj Genl U.S.A."

Philip Sheridan (1831-1888) distinguished himself as one of the great generals of the Union Army and later as a driving force in the Indian Wars. Sheridan's destruction of Virginia's agricultural capacity starved Lee's army into surrender. After the Civil War, he adapted this strategy to defeat hostile Plains Indians by killing off buffalo herds whenever possible. While "Little Phil" may have been known as a hero in the North, those that fought in opposition to him more likely viewed him as a villain. Sheridan ironically was also largely responsible for the preservation and protection of Yellowstone National Park.

Condition: Light soiling throughout, with bumping to the corners. Slight wear on verso.
