Mathew Brady CDV- 12 lb. Howitzer Captured by 17th NY Volunteers at the Battle of Hanover Court House (which took place on May 17, 1862, in Virginia). The preprinted caption on the verso shows that this is image No. 417 in Mathew Brady's Album Gallery series. Col. H. S. Lansing was in charge of the 17th Regiment and the cannon that was captured from Captain Latham's rebel battery weighed 1,458 lbs. The photo shows a number of Union soldiers posed behind the massive gun. There is an 1862 copyright statement on the front as well as a warning regarding same on the verso. Very fine condition with only a tiny bit of foxing at the very top margin. Excellent image.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
