John "Jack" Coffee Hays Carte de Visite, circa 1857. 2.5" x 4". A three-quarter seated portrait albumen print of Hays made from an original Mathew Brady salt print of the former Texas Ranger. Hays is seated in a chair wearing a white shirt, black frock coat, and waistcoat. "Col. Jack Hays" has been written in pencil on verso. Published by E. & H.T. Anthony, New York. A fine example of an important image of the former Texas Ranger after he migrated to California. In 2014, Heritage Auctions sold another copy of this image for $4,062. The one offered here boasts a crisper image retaining greater detail.

Condition: Gently toned; clean mount with sharp and untrimmed edges.
