    Jefferson Davis Carte de Visite Signed "Jeffer. Davis." 2.5" x 4", with a Vannerson & Jones, Richmond imprint on verso which also states "Negatives retained for future Copies." A vignette bust portrait of the Confederate president, who is seen wearing a high collar shirt and tie. The card is captioned as being "Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1866, by VANNERSON & JONES, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the District of Columbia." Jefferson Davis served as U.S. Senator from Mississippi from 1857-1861 before he became president of the Confederate States. He was arrested on May 10, 1865 by Union soldiers and imprisoned for two years. Davis was formally pardoned by President Johnson on Christmas Day 1868. Davis went on to become the president of the Carolina Life Insurance Company as well as an author. He died on December 6, 1889, and his funeral was a multi-day affair observed by thousands.     Condition: Uneven toning throughout, with minor spotting. A small amount of soiling on verso, else very good.
