    James Shields Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", a seated portrait in uniform, with no backstamp. Signed below the image: "Jas Shields."

    James Shields (1810-1879), an Irish native fluent in four languages, served in the Black Hawk, Mexican and Civil Wars. He is most famous as the man who challenged political rival Abraham Lincoln to a duel "at broadswords" which, fortunately, was averted.

    Condition: Light edge toning and soiling. Spotting on verso along with pencil notations. Minor corner wear.
