James Barnes Carte de Visite Signed "J. Barnes Brig Genl." 2.5" x 4", with no imprint present on verso. A vignette bust portrait of Barnes, seen in his Union uniform. Signed at the bottom of the albumen, and spilling onto the mount. James Barnes (1801-1869) was a civil engineer for the railroads, and held the position of superintendent of the Western Railroad for 22 years. He was commissioned as a colonel in the 18th Massachusetts Infantry in July 1861 and fought as part of the Army of the Potomac. He fought at Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. At the Battle of Gettysburg, one of his brigades under Col. Strong Vincent was paramount in repulsing the Confederates flanking attempt at Little Round Top. Barnes was wounded later that day while commanding two other brigades in the Wheatfield. Although he recovered from this injury, Barnes never returned to active combat duty. After the war, he returned to work for the railroads, and was part of the oversight commission for the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Light toning, with a small amount of spotting. There is a small scratch with some paper loss at the upper left edge. Overall good.
