    Description

Granville O. Haller Carte de Visite Signed "Yours Truly G.O. Haller." 2.5" x 4", with an R. W. Addis, Washington imprint on verso. A vignette bust portrait of the Union officer, seen in uniform. Haller was tasked with commanding McClellan's headquarters guard at the beginning of the war, and later headed the defense of south-central Pennsylvania. It was in this capacity that he sent out the call of alarm in the early days of the Gettysburg Campaign. Haller arrived at Gettysburg in mid-June and warned the citizens there of the impending Confederate invasion. As the Confederates began their invasion of Pennsylvania, Haller withdrew from Gettysburg to Wrightsville and set fire to the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge in an attempt to prevent Confederate General Gordon from crossing the Susquehanna River. Following the Battle of Fredericksburg, Haller was dismissed from the Army after he was accused of disloyal conduct. The case was re-examined in 1879, and Haller was acquitted and his commission reinstated. He and his wife moved West after the war and settled in Washington Territory. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Soiling at the lower right corner and on verso. Light toning throughout. On reverse has been written in pencil numerous key dates from Haller's life, taking up the majority of blank space.
