    George W. Morgan Signed Twice Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", a bust portrait in uniform, with an M.M. Griswold, Columbus, Ohio backstamp on verso. Signed below the image: "Geo W. Morgan" in pencil and "George W. Morgan" in ink below that. On verso the photograph is identified as Morgan in an unknown hand, and as being "taken Oct. of 1862." A pencil notation at the top edge reads, "L.J.C. from Gen. M 1864."

    George Washington Morgan (1820-1893), having served in the Texas Revolution and the Mexican-American war, was appointed a brigadier general in November 1861 commanding the 7th Division of the Army of Ohio. After a disagreement with General Sherman, and his own failing health, he resigned his commission in June 1863. He returned to Ohio, the state he later represented in the U.S. Congress for three terms.

    Condition: Light toning and soiling. Pencil and ink notations on verso. Light wear to the corners.
