    George Meade Carte de Visite Signed "Geo. G. Meade Maj. Genl. USA." 2.5" x 4", with an F. Gutekunst, Philadelphia imprint on verso. A vignette profile portrait of Meade, seen dressed in his major general uniform. This image is from the post-1862 period after Meade was promoted to major general for his supporting actions during the Battle of Fredericksburg. Signed on the lower part of the albumen and on the mount below.

    George Meade (1815-1872) was an 1835 graduate of West Point and served with distinction in the Second Seminole War, Mexican-American War and most notably in the Civil War. He served in many of the major battles of the war and is probably best known for his defeat of Lee at Gettysburg. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

    Condition: On verso is written in pencil, "Commander in Chief." Lightly toned throughout with minor wear at the corners, else very good.
