    Description

    George Meade Carte de Visite Signed "Geo. G. Meade Maj. Genl. U.S.A." 2.5" x 4", with an Alex. Gardner, Washington, D.C. imprint on verso. A three quarter seated portrait of Meade, seen dressed in his major general uniform, holding his kepi in his lap and resting his right arm on the fringed arm of the chair. Meade was promoted to major general in 1862 for his supporting actions during the Battle of Fredericksburg. Signed on the mount below the albumen.

    George Meade (1815-1872) was an 1835 graduate of West Point and served with distinction in the Second Seminole War, Mexican-American War and most notably in the Civil War. He served in many of the major battles of the war and was promoted to command the entire Army of the Potomac just three days before the Battle of Gettysburg. He later went on to command the army during the Overland Campaign, the Siege of Petersburg, and Appomattox, which saw the final surrender of Lee. From the Bret J.     Condition: Light toning throughout, with minor edge and corner wear. The edges of the albumen are slightly uneven. Else very good.
