George Custer Carte de Visite Signed with Rank.
2.5" x 4", with an M.B. Brady & Co., Washington D.C. & New York imprint on verso. A vignette portrait of the flamboyant general, wearing his signature wide brimmed hat. Signed at the bottom of the albumen, "Truly your friend GA Custer Bvt Maj Genl." Custer had been promoted to brevet major general of U.S. Volunteers on October 19, 1864, after his heroic service at the Battle of Winchester and Fisher's Hill. He later received another promotion to brevet major general of the U.S. Army on March 13, 1865, following Lee's surrender at Appomattox. The card is captioned as being "Entered according to Act of Congress by M.B. Brady & Co. in the year 1865 in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia."

According to Custer in Photographs, this image, labeled K-77V, was taken sometime around March 23 1865, before he mustered out of the volunteers and reverted to the rank of captain. Custer is most remembered for his "Last Stand" against the Lakota and Cheyenne alliance of Native Americans at the Battle of Little Big Horn, where he and his cavalrymen were overwhelmed by superior numbers and all killed. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Toning throughout, with some light soiling and wear at the edges and corners. Very light foxing to the top of the albumen. On verso, there is some minor soiling and uneven toning. Boldly signed. Overall very good.
