    George Armstrong Custer: Civil War Era CDV of "Capt. Custis, U.S.A." This Brady CDV dates from May 31, 1862. It shows Lieutenant James Barroll Washington (Confederate prisoner-of-war, Custer's friend and classmate), Custer and a black child. It is listed as K-6 in Katz's reference book. Washington was captured at the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia. The photograph by taken by James F. Gibson. The two men were seated on tree stumps, about to be photographed, when Washington called over for the young boy to be seated between them. Washington quipped that the photo ought to be titled: "Both sides, the cause" and so it appeared in "Harper's Weekly". It was published by Brady both as a CDV and a stereo card. It is #428 in "Brady's Album Gallery" and titled: "Lieut. Washington, a Confederate Prisoner, and Capt. Custis, U.S.A." It measures 2 5/8" x 4 1/4" and is irregularly trimmed at top and bottom. The albumen is bold and resonant.
