    Description

George A. Custer Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", with an M.B. Brady & Co., Washington, D.C. and New York imprint on verso. Custer is featured in this chest up portrait, in uniform and in profile, turned slightly to his right. Custer's shoulder straps are somewhat faint, but appear to be that of a brigadier general, dating this photo to sometime after July 1863.

Custer's meteoric rise during the Civil War is the stuff of legends. At the outset of the War, the recent West Point graduate was commissioned a second lieutenant, but by the closing days of the conflict, he had risen to the rank of brevet major general. While he would retain this rank for less than a year before being returned to his permanent rank of captain in the 5th Cavalry, he nonetheless was immortalized as the youngest major general in the Union Army at the age of 25. Following his service in the war, Custer would go on to lose his life during his "Last Stand" against the Lakota and Cheyenne alliance of Native Americans at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Superior numbers overwhelmed him and his cavalrymen and all were killed. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Light toning with minor edge and corner wear. Light soiling and uneven toning on verso. Overall very good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
