    Description

Four Views of Abraham Lincoln - Cartes de Visite. 1) The first of four excellent varieties of Lincoln photographs is a variant of the famous "Ink Well" photograph. Abraham Lincoln posed for the famous "Ink Well" portraits with Alexander Gardner on February 24, 1861. There are five different variants of the photograph. This is #O-49c; with his right hand in his lap and the left draped down over the arm of the chair. The brim of his top hat is barely visible in the right of the frame. Anthony / Brady imprint on verso. In very fine condition; light overall toning, but a very dark and crisp image; light staining in the upper right corner. 2) #O-27; taken by Alexander Hesler. Lincoln said of this photograph: "That looks better and expresses me better than any I have ever seen; if it pleases the people I am satisfied." Not the full photo, but an ovoid trimmed version is offered here. Set into a gold foliate border, the imprint on the back has been rubbed off slightly. In fine condition; the emulsion has yellowed significantly with age; pencil notations on verso; light soiling on mount. 3) #O-55 An engraving from the original by either C.D. Fredericks or James McClees. It is recognizable from the rounded collar. The photo has been attributed to many photographers, including Brady. In very fine condition; light soiling on both sides; corners moderately worn; double lined blue border; rounded corners. 4) A White House photo by Wenderoth & Taylor, taken sometime in 1864. This is the oval variant offered as an advertisement by the photography company to promote its work. Bears the Wenderoth & Taylor imprint on the verso in gold. An excellent likeness. In very fine condition; very clean and clear; pencil notations on verso; no border; square corners. Listed as #O-95.
