Fitz John Porter Carte de Visite Signed "F. J. Porter Maj. Genl & Col. 15 Inf." 2.5" x 4", with an R. W. Addis, Washington, D.C. imprint on verso. A vignette bust portrait of the Union general dressed in his major general uniform. Signed at the lower part of the albumen and on the mount below.

Fitz John Porter (1822-1901) was an 1845 West Point graduate who served gallantly in the Mexican-American War before joining the Union Army. He was promoted to colonel of the 15th Infantry in May 1861 and later received a divisional command in the Army of the Potomac under General McClellan. He fought at key battles such as the Yorktown, Gaines' Mill, Malvern Hill, Second Bull Run, and Antietam.

Having served under him, Porter was a strong admirer of McClellan. When McClellan's successor, John Pope, was soundly defeated at Second Bull Run, Porter publicly denounced him, which resulted in a court-martial and conviction for Porter. He was dismissed from the army on January 21, 1863 and was unable to clear his name until 1878. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Lightly toned throughout, with soiling at the edges. The corners are worn and the left edge is slightly uneven. On verso, there is an area of soiling or dampstaining at the right edge, along with additional minor soiling. Overall good.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
