    David D. Porter Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", a seated portrait in uniform holding a glove, with a Brady, Washington, D.C. backstamp on verso. Signed below the image: "David D Porter B Genl." With a blue 2 cent George Washington stamp on verso.

    David D. Porter (1813-1891) commanded the U.S. Mississippi Squadron aboard his flagship, USS Black Hawk, during the 1862-1863 Vicksburg campaigns. After Lincoln's assassination, Porter felt a great deal of guilt, believing that he might have been able to stop Booth had he been there.

    Condition: Edge toning and soiling. Slight smudge to the first letter of Porter's signature. Soiling on verso and some paper loss to the stamp. Wear at the card corners.
