Confederate Signal Corps Blockade Runner Album: Havana CDV's. These photographs were all taken in Havana, Cuba, a safe port for rebel blockade runners. Two have back marks of C. D. Fredricks & Co. and the third has the mark of Fernandez Fotografo. The subject of the latter is unknown. The CDV of the seated gentleman is inscribed on the verso: "Havana 19th 65. Don't forget this Child when you get to Texas. Very Truly Yours & c. Jesse C. Bailey. A. L. Lindsay Chief Sgn. Corps Officer". A notation in the album that originally housed this image indicated that Bailey operated out of Houston, as did the album's owner. The third CDV was identified in the album as A. W. Pearce, Signal Officer of the C.S.S. Lark. The Lark made four successful round trips between Galveston and Havana. In April 1865, she ran aground near the entrance to Galveston harbor. Confederate ground forces were able to assist her and fend off an attack by two Union launches. On May 24th, she ran the gauntlet of Union blockading ships and made it to open sea, the last Confederate ship to do so.
