Confederate Signal Corps Blockade Runner Album: Four CDV's and Album. We are selling the empty CDV album that was assembled by Lt. Albert Lindsay, stationed in Houston. It contained portraits of prominent Confederate leaders and generals but, more importantly, a large collection of photographs related to the Signal Corps and blockade runners. A new branch of the military called the Signal Corps, heretofore nonexistent, was established on April 19,1862 and attached to the Adjutant and Inspector-General's Department. General John Bankhead Magruder then ordered Captain William Norris to establish a system of signals on the Virginia peninsula and across the James River. When Norris left to head the Secret Service and Signal Corps, Lt. Lindsay headed the unit under the command of Magruder. After the Battle of Galveston on January 1, 1863, Magruder's army saw very little action. In one letter home, Lindsay complained that Magruder spent too much time on parties, balls and plays and exclaimed: "I'd rather be back in Virginia killing Yankees!" He contacted yellow fever while in Texas and was unable to return home to Virginia until 1866. This lot has a CDV of a "Signal Tower Pt. [illeg] Va." (shows typical Civil War period wooden frame signal tower with what appears to be wooden cabins/barracks and a number of mounted troops in the far background. No backmark. Some fading on upper portion of the image, else excellent), a CDV of an unidentified signal corps member with Anderson & Turner of New Orleans back mark, a CDV of a man identified in the album as Dr. Smith of Houston (Bendann of Baltimore backmark) and a CDV of an unidentified woman with Vannerson & Jones back mark (the sole female in the album and a prime candidate as Mrs. Lt. Lindsay). The covers of the album are detached. One free endpaper has a sketch of a wreath and is inscribed "A. L. Lindsay Houston Tex 1864".
