Confederate John S. Mosby Carte de Visite Signed "Jno: S. Mosby." 2.5" x 3.75", with an E. & H.T. Anthony, New York imprint on verso. A vignette bust portrait of Mosby, the celebrated Confederate guerrilla fighter known as the "Grey Ghost." Mosby (1833-1916) attended the University of Virginia until being expelled for shooting another student. He became a lawyer and had his own practice in Howardsville until he joined the Confederate Army in 1861. Early into his military career, he served under William "Grumble" Jones in the Washington Mounted Rifles. In June 1862, while on a scouting mission for J.E.B. Stuart, he was captured by the Union and imprisoned at Old Capitol Prison for 10 days before being exchanged. By the start of 1863, Mosby's reputation was such that Stuart approved Mosby's wish to form and command his own unit, the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry. He conducted guerrilla activities behind Union lines with his small group of men who became known as "Mosby's Rangers". These raids continued deep into Federal-held territory from early 1863 until the war's end. After Lee's surrender, a $5,000 bounty was put on Mosby's head, and he was forced to surrender on June 17, 1865. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Minor soiling and imperfections throughout. Some chipping along the left vertical edge of the albumen. Small area of soiling on verso. Boldly signed.
