    Description

Confederate General Stephen Elliott Jr. Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4". Affixed to a George S. Cook, Charleston mount, Elliott is seen seated in the uniform of a Confederate general bearing two stars on the collar and a double row of buttons, turned slightly to his right. Lower right corner of the mount is slightly damaged, but the image remains unaffected.

General Stephen Elliott Jr. (1830-1866) was a slave-owning farmer who served in the South Carolina legislature before the war. He was present during the bombardment of Fort Sumter and was involved in the Battles of Port Royal, the Wilderness, and at the Siege of Petersburg, among others. He received several wounds throughout the war, including one to the head during the bombardment of Charleston in December 1863. His final wound came during the Battle of Bentonville shortly before the end of the war and he was sent home shortly before his brigade surrendered to Union forces. After the war, he assumed the life of a fisherman and was again elected to the legislature, but before he could take office, he died of wounds suffered during the war.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
