Confederate General Robert E. Lee Carte de Visite, Richmond, 1865. Approximately 2.5" x 4" with an E. & H.T. Anthony studio mark on the verso, from a Brady negative. Shortly after his surrender at Appomattox Court House, Matthew Brady persuaded a reluctant Lee to once again don his uniform and pose for a series of images taken at the back of Lee's residence in Richmond. The images included Lee posed sitting, as in this image, standing, and with his son Washington Custis Lee and his aide-de-camp Lt. Col. Walter H. Taylor. The image bears a contemporary ink identification at the lower edge. The image is age-toned with some scattered soiling ad discoloration. The right edge has a small chip and a minute pin hole is on the top edge. Mounting remnants to the verso, else in good condition.
