    Description

    Confederate Cartes-de-Visite: William Dorsey Pender and John C. Pemberton. Two (2) cartes including William Dorsey Pender (1834-1863) by E & H.T. Anthony, New York; and an unmarked John C. Pemberton (1814-1881). Pender, a North Carolina native, distinguished himself in the Peninsula Campaign, Seven Pines, Cedar Mountain, Harper's Ferry, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Three times wounded in action, he lost his life following amputation of a leg injured by a shell fragment on the second day of Gettysburg. Pemberton achieved the rank of Lieutenant General in the war, commanded several departments, but is best remembered for his surrender of Vicksburg. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
