Confederate Cartes-de-Visite: Nathan Bedford Forrest, John Buchanan Floyd and James Fleming Fagan. Three (3) cartes including Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821-1877) by E & H.T. Anthony, New York (image slightly faded and shows foxing); unmarked John Buchanan Floyd (1806-1863) (carte is cut at bottom with loss of bottom part of image); and an unmarked full-standing James Fleming Fagan (1828-1893) (Albumen has slight loss at top right but does not affect image). Forrest, a.k.a. "The Wizard of the Saddle", is considered one of the most accomplished commanders of the Civil War, but not without controversy, due to the massacre at Ft. Pillow and his role in the founding of the Ku Klux Klan. Floyd's "claim to fame" rests with the role he played as Secretary of War in transferring arms to the Southern states in anticipation of the war. Fagan commanded Arkansas troops and distinguished himself at Helena and Camden. He later fought under Sterling Price in Missouri. The from-life image of him in uniform offered here is quite rare and desirable. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
