Confederate Cartes-de-Visite: John Stuart Williams, Cadmus Marcellus Wilcox, Henry A. Wise, Felix Zollicoffer, Joseph Wheeler and Louis T. Wigfall. Six (6) cartes including John Stuart Williams (1818-1898); Cadmus Marcellus Wilcox (1824-1890); Henry A. Wise (1806-1876), which shows slight foxing; Felix Kirk Zollicoffer (1812-1862); Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906); and Louis T. Wigfall (1816-1874). All cartes are by Anthony, New York, with the Wigfall, Wheeler, Wise, and Zollicoffer cartes from negatives from Brady's National Portrait Gallery. Williams served in Kentucky, Tennessee and southwestern Virginia, coming at odds with Joe Wheeler in the Atlanta Campaign. Wilcox served under James Longstreet, fighting at Seven Days, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Petersburg. His greatest accomplishment was keeping Federal forces at bay at Salem Church, thereby allowing Lee to engage Hooker and gain a victory at Chancellorsville. Wise, a career politician who, as Governor, oversaw the execution of John Brown, saw military duty in the Carolinas and around Richmond. "Fighting Joe" Wheeler was an adept cavalry commander who fought at Stone's River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and, most notably, against Sherman during his march to the sea. Wigfall, a Texas politician, was a true firebrand, urging secession as far back as 1844. He served briefly as Beauregard's aide-de-camp and was a vocal critic of President Jefferson Davis. Zellicoffer, a prominent Tennessee politician and newspaper publisher, had his military career cut short when killed by a Union volley at the Battle of Mill Springs, January 19, 1862. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
