Confederate Cartes-de-Visite: James Longstreet, John B. Magruder, Mansfield Lovell and William Wing Loring. Four (4) cartes including James Longstreet (1821-1904) by William Quay, New Orleans Southern Photographic Temple of Art; full standing John B. Magruder (1807-1871) by Charles D. Fredricks & Company, New York; Mansfield Lovell (1822-1884); and William Wing Loring (1818-1886) (somewhat faded). Both Lovell and Loring are by E & H.T. Anthony, New York. Magruder performed well in the Seminole and Mexican Wars, but did little after an initial success at Big Bethel. The proud and pompous general emigrated to Mexico at war's end and fought under Maximilian, eventually settling in Houston. Lovell's record in the Civil War was less than exemplary. He was blamed, perhaps unfairly, for the loss of New Orleans and a poor showing at Corinth. Loring lost his arm in the assault of Mexico City and had a true passion for military science. He feuded with Stonewall Jackson prior to obtaining divisional commands. His greatest achievement was a vigorous defense of Vicksburg against Union forces which permitted the escape of forces under his command. He was known as "Old Blizzards" for his exhortation to troops raining fire upon Union soldiers from the parapets above: "Give them blizzards, boys! Give them blizzards!" From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
